Earlier generations of American Christians carried two little books with them to church each Sunday—their Bibles and their small, pocket-sized hymnals that were used at home throughout the week. Someone called the hymnbook the common man’s theology book, for it contains biblical truth set to music. For example, one old hymn, largely forgotten today, still teaches a great lesson about resisting sin: “Yield not to temptation, for yielding is sin; each victory will help you some other to win.”

The hymn goes on to give some practical pointers: “Shun evil companions, bad language disdain, God’s Name hold in reverence, nor take it in vain; be thoughtful and earnest, kindhearted and true, look ever to Jesus, He’ll carry you through.”

It’s true that as we resist temptation and draw closer to the Lord, we experience more victory. Each time we defeat temptation we become stronger, not in ourselves, but in our Lord. We overcome sin one temptation at a time. As we resist the devil, he flees from us; and as we draw near to God, He draws near to us.

Ask the Savior to help you, comfort, strengthen and keep you; He is willing to aid you, He will carry you through.
